What is an XLS file?

XLS is the original binary Microsoft Excel workbook format, the spreadsheet standard from Excel 5 through Excel 2003, before XLSX replaced it in 2007. Like its siblings DOC and PPT, it is a closed OLE compound file storing sheets, cell values, formulas, and formatting. Plenty of business records, exports from old systems, and legacy reports still arrive as .xls.

Why does my old XLS file look wrong or get rejected by newer tools?

The binary XLS format is aging, and modern Excel opens it in compatibility mode while some web upload forms reject the extension. Because a spreadsheet is a living calculation rather than a fixed document, layouts and formatting can also shift between Excel versions and alternative spreadsheet apps. Exporting to PDF pins the printed view of each sheet so the numbers land in front of the reader exactly as formatted.

How do I convert an XLS to PDF?

Unlike our in-browser conversions, XLS to PDF needs a server-side office engine, so the workbook is sent over an encrypted connection to a clearly labeled lane. The input is deleted immediately after conversion and the PDF output is removed about an hour later. If the file holds sensitive figures, that delete-fast lane is how we keep the footprint small, but be aware it does leave your device.

Will all my sheets and formulas come through in the PDF?

The PDF captures the rendered, printed view of the workbook rather than the live spreadsheet, so formulas become their calculated values and the result reflects each sheet's print layout. That is exactly what you want for a fixed snapshot to share or archive. If you need the workbook to stay editable with working formulas, keep the original .xls or save it as XLSX; hushvert only converts XLS out to PDF, not into another spreadsheet format.
